Day by Day Safari Itinerary

Peaks & Plains, A Kilimanjaro Trek and Northern Tanzania Safari.

Day 1: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

After breakfast in Arusha, you will transfer by road to the base of Mount Kilimanjaro and arrive at Marangu Gate, where your trek begins. Meet your mountain guide and porters, complete park formalities, and start the hike through lush rainforest. The trail winds gently upward beneath a canopy of ancient trees where you may encounter blue monkeys, colobus monkeys, and a variety of birdlife. As you ascend, the air becomes cooler and the vegetation thicker, with giant ferns and moss-draped trees creating a mystical atmosphere. After about 4–5 hours of trekking, you will reach Mandara Hut, where you will settle into mountain accommodation and enjoy a hot meal. In the late afternoon, a short acclimatization walk to Maundi Crater offers panoramic views across the Kenyan plains before returning to the hut for dinner and overnight.

Day 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

Wake up to the crisp mountain air and continue your trek through the final stretches of rainforest before entering the moorland zone. The landscape opens dramatically with rolling hills, giant heather, and unique alpine flora, such as the striking lobelia and groundsel plants. As you climb higher, the views of Mawenzi Peak, Kilimanjaro’s jagged secondary summit, become more impressive with every step. The trail to Horombo Hut is moderate but steady, taking around 6–7 hours of hiking. On arrival, you will be welcomed with stunning views stretching back down to the plains below. Overnight at Horombo Hut, where you can relax and enjoy the camaraderie of fellow trekkers.

Day 3: Descent to Marangu Gate

This morning, take a short acclimatization hike towards the Zebra Rocks formation, an area named for its striking striped volcanic rock patterns. Here you will enjoy sweeping views over the moorlands before beginning your descent back towards Marangu Gate. The trek downhill retraces your steps through lush forest alive with bird calls and monkeys darting through the trees. After 5–6 hours, you will reach the park gate, collect your certificates, and bid farewell to your mountain crew. Transfer by road back to Arusha, where you will have the evening at leisure to rest from your trekking adventure.

Day 4: Tarangire National Park

Today you depart Arusha after breakfast and transfer by road to Tarangire National Park, one of Tanzania’s most picturesque reserves. As you enter the park, your safari adventure begins with a transfer game drive through landscapes dotted with giant baobab trees and open grasslands. Tarangire is home to the highest density of elephants in Tanzania, and it is common to see large herds moving gracefully across the savannah. The Tarangire River, a vital water source, attracts diverse wildlife, including giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, and predators such as lions and leopards. Bird enthusiasts will be thrilled with over 500 species recorded here. After a day of exploration, you will arrive at your accommodation.

Day 5: Ngorongoro Crater Tour

After an early breakfast, depart for Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Descend into the world famous Ngorongoro Crater, often referred to as the “Eighth Wonder of the World.” The crater floor offers a unique ecosystem where a staggering variety of wildlife thrives within the volcanic walls. On today’s guided game drive, you will encounter large prides of lions, vast herds of buffalo, grazing zebras, and the rare black rhino, which is protected within this UNESCO World Heritage Site. Hippos can be seen wallowing in freshwater pools while flocks of flamingos’ color the soda lakes pink. You will enjoy a picnic lunch at a scenic spot inside the crater before continuing your exploration. As evening approaches, transfer by road to your accommodation for dinner and overnight.

Day 6: Lake Manyara National Park & Transfer to Arusha.

This morning you set off for Lake Manyara National Park, a jewel at the base of the Rift Valley escarpment. On your guided game drive, you will explore its contrasting landscapes of groundwater forest, acacia woodland, and the shallow alkaline lake that stretches across its center. Lake Manyara is renowned for its tree climbing lions, often found lounging on branches in the shade. The park is also rich in birdlife, with flamingos, pelicans, and storks flocking along the shoreline, while troops of baboons move through the forests. Hippos inhabit the water channels, and giraffes are often seen browsing nearby acacia trees. After a rewarding morning of exploration, you will enjoy a packed lunch before transferring by road back to Arusha, arriving in the evening where the adventure concludes.
