Day by Day Safari Itinerary

Zanzibar to the Summit, Conquer Kilimanjaro via the Lemosho Route.

Day 1
Day 1: Lemosho Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp
Kilimanjaro Trek Begins. After an early breakfast, youโ€™ll be transferred to Lemosho Gate (2,100 m) where park formalities are completed and your trek officially begins. The first dayโ€™s walk is a gentle introduction to Kilimanjaro, leading you through lush, unspoiled rainforest alive with bird calls and the possibility of spotting black-and-white colobus monkeys. The trail is scenic and peaceful, gradually ascending to your first campsite at Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,650 m), whose name means โ€œBig Treeโ€ in Swahili. It's also the nearest camp to Lemosho Gate. Amenities are simple, with shared toilets, but you'll be camped close to plenty of other travelers with whom you can share information, advice and stories. Here, youโ€™ll enjoy a freshly prepared dinner and settle into your tent, surrounded by the tranquil sounds of the forest, ready for the adventure that lies ahead.
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
  • Drinks: Soda, Water
  • Accommodation: Mti Mkubwa Camp
Day 2
Day 2: Mti Mkubwa To Shira Camp 1
After breakfast, the trail leaves the rainforest and enters the heather and moorland zone, offering sweeping views of the Shira Plateau. Youโ€™ll pass through rolling hills and cross several streams before reaching Shira Camp 1 (3,810 m). We think you'll enjoy Shira Camp 1 which sees fewer travelers than many other Kilimanjaro campsites. There are no facilities here, but you should be able to see Kilimanjaro's Kibo summit north-east from your tent, and Mount Meru to the west. Although there are no trees, the scrubby vegetation adds a tinge of green. As the forest thins, the air becomes crisper, and the night skies here are perfect for stargazing.
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
  • Drinks: Soda, Water
  • Accommodation: Shira Camp 1
Day 3
Day 3: Shira Camp 1 to Shira Camp 2
Todayโ€™s trek is shorter, allowing for gradual acclimatization. The route takes you deeper into the Shira Plateau, with panoramic views of Kibo Peak and the surrounding valleys. Youโ€™ll arrive at Shira Camp 2 (3,850 m) in the afternoon, where you can relax and soak in the dramatic alpine scenery. Camp among the rocks and moorlands on the slopes of Mt Kilimanjaro. There are no facilities only cleared areas where you can pitch a tent.
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
  • Drinks: Soda, Water
  • Accommodation: Shira Camp 2
Day 4
Day 4: Shira Camp 2 to Baracco Camp
This is an important acclimatization day as you ascend to Lava Tower (4,630 m) before descending to Barranco Camp (3,976 m). The climb to Lava Tower helps your body adapt to higher altitudes, while the descent into the Barranco Valley rewards you with breathtaking views and the famous Barranco Wall towering above.
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
  • Drinks: Soda, Water
  • Accommodation: Baracco Camp
Day 5
Day 5: Baracco Camp to Karanga Camp
Youโ€™ll begin the day with the exciting scramble up the Barranco Wall, a non-technical but exhilarating climb that offers spectacular vistas. The route then undulates through alpine desert landscapes before arriving at Karanga Camp, there's a wild and beautiful feel to staying at Karanga Camp, which sits at an altitude of 3995m, high on Mt Kilimanjaro. There are no trees here and the surrounding alpine desert landscape is stunning. You can also see the mountain's summit from here, and there's plenty of room for everyone's tent. Lots of other climbers pass through here.
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
  • Drinks: Soda, Water
  • Accommodation: Karanga Camp
Day 6
Day 6: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
A short but steady trek brings you to Barafu Camp (4,681 m), your staging point for the summit. The name 'Barafu' means 'ice' in Swahili, which refers to the cold temperatures that you will encounter here. The environment here is stark and windswept, with views stretching across Mawenzi Peak and the southern glaciers. After an early dinner, youโ€™ll rest in preparation for the midnight summit attempt. The views are big and the landscape is bare, and there are always plenty of other climbers camping at Barafu.
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
  • Drinks: Soda, Water
  • Accommodation: Barafu Camp
Day 7
Day 7: Barafu Camo to Summit (Uhuru Peak) to Mweka Camp
At around midnight, youโ€™ll begin your final ascent under a blanket of stars, climbing slowly but steadily to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), the highest point in Africa. Witness the sunrise from the summit before starting your descent to Mweka Camp (3,100 m), where youโ€™ll spend the night surrounded by lush vegetation once more.
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
  • Drinks: Soda, Water
  • Accommodation: Mweka Camp
Day 8
Day 8: Mweka Camp To Mweka Gate To Arusha/Moshi.
After breakfast, you'll continue the descent down to the Mweka Park Gate to receive your summit certificates. At lower elevations, it can be wet and muddy. Gaiters and trekking poles will help. Shorts and t-shirts will probably be plenty to wear (keep rain gear and warmer clothing handy).Dancing Simba Safari vehicle will be waiting for you at Mweka gate to drive you back to your hotel in Moshi/Arusha, or else if you are boarding your international flight today, you will be transferred to Kilimanjaro International Airport depending on your flight schedule
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch
  • Drinks: Soda, Water
  • Accommodation: Accommodation On Request
