In April, East Africa enters the long rains season, but that doesn't mean safaris are off-limits. In fact, April is a green season with lush landscapes, dramatic skies, baby animals, fewer tourists, and cheaper prices. However, you'll want to be strategic about where you go.
Country | General Conditions | Safari Feasibility |
---|---|---|
Tanzania | Heavy rains in most parks | โ Still possible in Ngorongoro & Tarangire |
Kenya | Long rains begin | โ ๏ธ Wet, but dry areas (Laikipia) are okay. |
Uganda | Rainy but manageable | โ Gorilla trekking is still open (with effort). |
Rain doesn't affect game viewing much due to its enclosed geography.
Excellent time to see the Big Five, especially the black rhino.
Landscapes are lush and photogenic.
Less rain than the Serengeti.
Excellent for elephants, baobab trees, and fewer crowds.
Often overlooked = more personal safari.
Drier than most Kenyan parks in April.
Excellent for rare species (e.g., Grevyโs zebra, reticulated giraffe).
High-end conservancies like Lewa and Ol Pejeta.
Gorilla trekking is still open, though trails can be muddy.
Easier permit availability.
The rainforest is always humid, so April isnโt dramatically worse.
Zanzibar or Diani Beach has short showers, but it's quiet, lush, and cheap.
Great time for post-safari relaxation without tourist crowds.
